Arsenal claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday, with Bukayo Saka scoring the decisive goal in the 59th minute to give Mikel Arteta’s side another important Premier League win.
The champions had to be patient in a match that offered little in the way of clear chances before Saka finally broke the deadlock. Arsenal controlled large periods of the game without immediately turning their possession into goals, while Villa struggled to create a meaningful response after falling behind.
Saka breaks Aston Villa resistance
Arsenal’s breakthrough came after a move involving Gabriel, Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori. Eze found Calafiori in space down the left side of the penalty area, and the defender delivered a low ball across the face of goal. Saka arrived at the right moment to finish from close range and put Arsenal ahead.
The goal rewarded Arsenal’s growing control of the contest. Villa had defended for long spells and restricted the visitors from creating a succession of clear openings, but Arsenal continued to circulate possession and probe for an opening.
VAR denies Arsenal penalty
Arsenal had appeared to have another opportunity to take the lead shortly before Saka’s goal when Ian Maatsen brought the winger down after Saka had moved ahead of him. The referee initially pointed to the penalty spot, but a VAR review showed that the foul had occurred just outside the area. The decision was changed to an Arsenal free kick.
Saka then remained central to Arsenal’s attacking threat, eventually finding the decisive finish five minutes later. The sequence underlined how much pressure Arsenal were gradually applying despite Villa’s disciplined defensive shape.
Arsenal manage the game after taking lead
Villa needed a response but found it difficult to seriously trouble Arsenal’s defence. Arsenal’s midfield continued to protect the lead, with Declan Rice making an important interception when George Hemmings attempted to release Nicolas Jackson through the middle.
Arteta also introduced Mikel Merino and Bruno Guimarães during the second half as Arsenal looked to maintain control. Kai Havertz later went close to adding a second, but Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a strong save to deny the striker.
Villa made changes of their own, including the introductions of Alejandro Garnacho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the hosts could not turn their late pressure into an equaliser. Arsenal remained organised and saw out the final stages without conceding.
Villa left frustrated at Villa Park
For Aston Villa, the defeat continued a difficult start to the campaign following their heavy opening loss at Brighton. Unai Emery’s side showed greater defensive resistance against Arsenal, but their attacking output remained a concern.
Arsenal, meanwhile, began the season with another clean sheet and another victory. The result moved them to the top of the Premier League table and gave them six points from their opening two league matches.
The win was also a notable milestone for Arteta, who reached 250 Premier League games as Arsenal manager. His side did not produce an explosive attacking display, but their ability to remain patient, find a breakthrough and protect a narrow advantage was enough to secure three points from a demanding away fixture.
