Bukayo Saka scored the only goal as Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with two wins from two, edging Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park on Monday.
The England winger struck in the 59th minute after Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori combined to create the opening, giving Mikel Arteta’s side another clean sheet and a hard-earned three points in a tightly contested match.
Saka Decides Tight Contest
Arsenal had struggled to turn their possession into clear opportunities during a cautious first half, with both sides finding it difficult to create a genuine opening. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was largely protected by a disciplined defence, while Arsenal’s back line kept the hosts from producing a shot on target.
The game opened up after the interval, with Arteta introducing Eze for Christos Tzolis at half-time. The change gave Arsenal greater attacking impetus and helped create the move that eventually settled the contest.
Arsenal briefly thought they had earned a penalty when Saka went down under a challenge from Ian Maatsen, but a VAR review showed the foul had occurred just outside the penalty area. The decision was changed to a free kick.
Three minutes later, Arsenal found the breakthrough. Gabriel played the ball towards Eze, who released Calafiori down the inside-left channel. The Italian defender delivered a low ball across the face of goal and Saka arrived to finish from close range.
It was Saka’s second Premier League goal of the new campaign after he also scored in Arsenal’s opening-day victory over Coventry City.
Arsenal’s Defence Holds Firm
Villa needed a response but found Arsenal increasingly difficult to break down. Declan Rice was particularly important in front of the defence, while Calafiori combined his attacking contribution with disciplined work at the back.
Unai Emery’s side showed greater organisation than in their opening defeat but lacked the final pass and finishing quality needed to punish Arsenal. Emi Buendia had earlier struck the crossbar, while Nicolas Jackson and other Villa attackers struggled to turn promising positions into shots on target.
Arsenal managed the closing stages with patience. Rather than chasing a second goal, Arteta’s side prioritised control and defensive shape, limiting Villa’s opportunities to force an equaliser.
Two Wins for Arsenal, Pressure on Villa
The victory gives Arsenal six points from their opening two Premier League matches as the champions make a perfect start to their title defence. Their first two league games have also produced clean sheets, underlining the defensive stability that remains central to Arteta’s side.
Arsenal’s next league fixture is another major test when they host Chelsea on Sunday. The result at Villa Park gives Arteta’s team early momentum, even though the performance was less convincing in attack than their opening-day win.
Villa, meanwhile, have lost both of their opening matches without registering a shot on target in either game. Emery’s reshaped squad has shown flashes of promise, including encouraging performances from debutants such as Suzuki and Jackson, but the lack of attacking production will be an immediate concern.
Villa travel to Hull City next, while Arsenal return to the Emirates for the visit of Chelsea.
For Arsenal, the significance of the win lies less in its margin than in their ability to remain patient, find one decisive moment and protect the advantage. Saka provided that moment, and the champions left Villa Park with another three points.
